Frozen Vegetables

Woolworths imports their frozen vegetables from New Zealand. The poor Kiwis have all their first grade fresh veg whisked away under their noses.

Is availability or quality the issue? McCain, Nature’s Garden, Genadendal and Pick ‘n Pay own label all manage to stock their range of frozen vegetables (including potato chips) ‘Product of South Africa’.

Ok, not the entire range, generally the peas are imported across the brands. We clearly eat more peas than broccoli, cauliflower, sweet potato, carrots, green beans, spinach and the various combinations of those frozen back-ups, which offer good alternatives to canned goods.

The own-label frozen vegetables including the chips at Shoprite and Checkers are Product of RSA. In fact all frozen veg for sale at Shoprite are local with the exception of the infamous peas. The frozen chips sold under the Spar brand are locally produced.
