Outdoor and activity wear

‘Local is lekker’ in South Africa certainly applies to local outdoor activities and holidays. Although outdoor and activity wear is a strong Chinese domain, a good number of products are made in RSA.

Capestorm, despite its name, is not exclusively produced in South Africa. Locally manufactured clothes are easy to distinguish, though, as they have a bigger ‘Proudly South African’ label.

K-Way is a Cape Union Mart Group label (as are Cape Union, Old Khaki and Poetry). Not all of their clothing is produced locally, but there is a fair range of jackets and pants you can choose from. They are affordable, look cool, keep you warm, and are durable.

Cape Union (sometimes abbreviated CU) is the label Cape Union Mart uses for their cotton T-shirts. All the CU ones I saw where made in South Africa. I did NOT find anything in the Old Khaki or Poetry ranges, though, which was locally manufactured.

Second Skins makes locally manufactured clothes for just about any sports activity you can think of (cricket, rugby, triathlon, cycling, athletics, dance etc) for men, women and children.

Slick (a Swimeezy label) manufactures cycling clothes made in South Africa. They sell both men’s and ladies cycling shorts and tops online, as well as triathlon suits and warm tops and vests for winter.

For socks, you should look into Cape Mohair’s products. They make mohair socks that keep your feet happy and healthy. Apparently the South African cricket team plays only in mohair socks. Mohair is a fire-retardant material so it should be a match even for your hottest adventure.
